As a teacher in a school district with diverse socioeconomic statuses, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, loving and high energy.
They like to move, they love to create and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things have the ability to prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical" (if we let it). From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative, loving, and positive way, I aim to inspire our children to be achievers, to be kind, to be successful in whatever they choose to pursue.
My Project
Having a variety of seating options in the classroom helps the students to take ownership of their learning. They are able to choose a seat that is most comfortable for them instead of the cookie-cutter desks and chairs. Students learn in many different ways, so we think it's important that they are able to learn in a comfortable environment.
Alternative seating and flexible seating is becoming more popular in schools because teachers are seeing the positive impact it has in their classrooms, especially for students with ADHD or on the spectrum.
I would like to provide our students with these options. I am asking for twenty wobble/wiggle seats and twenty-four chair bands that would allow students flexibility and motion and a way to release built energy.
