My students attend a Title I school in Key West, Florida. While we live where others vacation, many of my students' families represent the hospitality and tourism industries working long hours many with multiple jobs, to make the best life for thier kids. My diverse learners come with many cultural heritages such as Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and the Florida Keys.
Many of my students are bilingual, speaking Spanish and Haitian Creole at home while learning in English here in my classroom.
This makes the entire classroom stronger as they are collaborating as researchers, learners, and scholars in our diverse classroom community.
My Project
Flexible seating is a strategy to allow students to choose thier type of seat so they can be the best learner they can be. Giving choice when appropriate allows students the freedom to thrive and see results from thier choices. With this project students are given multiple options of seats they can choose from when we are participating in small group and independent learning. All students have different learning styles and different ways teachers can engage them. Different ways of sitting is part of these learning styles that teachers can support by providing choices and options that students can choose from.
Engagment increases learning and engagement can be through choice of seat and it also can be through competition and game like activities like jeopardy using a white board and marker.
This project also will provide students with other engagement tools such as dry erase markers, erasers, and pouches so that in small groups students can use these tools to help them in math, writing, and reading. These tools are engaging because its a way for students to practice working together in small groups with games as well as provides the teacher with an understanding of student learning levels in the form of quick, engaging, formative assessments to then development instruction based off of.
