My Students

I work in a rural school district with 100% free and reduced lunch. Many of our students come to school with their basic needs being met and are ready to learn. However more students arrive each day having dealt with trauma in many different parts of their past and present life. Within the past five years our district has consolidated buildings due to declining enrollment. Therefore, I teach both 8th and 10th Grade English in the same building.

As a teacher at I must dedicate ample time within my classroom to form trusting relationships in order for learning to occur.

All this

aside, I take great pride in contributing to the success of my ambitious students on a daily basis.

My Project

80% of the students in my room struggle with learning due to the fact that they are uncomfortable and cannot focus. The adolescent years are such a transitional time with growth and hormones changing daily. As educators we are forcing students to stay seated in a chair which is not the right size behind a desk that is not fitting. If a student does not feel right there is no way he or she can learn right. In addition due to budget cuts, our classrooms our jammed with large desks and chairs which make for a very uncomfortable learning environment. Giving my students flexible seating options will increase learning and focus on a daily basis.
