Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher of 41 first grade dual language students. Being part of the dual-language program, these students are bilingual Spanish and English speakers or Spanish speaking English Language Learners. Some of my students are being exposed to English for the first time in their lives and are new to this country.
These students are filled with excitement and curiosity; eager to learn the English language as well as continue to become more proficient in the Spanish language.
Unfortunately, many of my students also come from homes that are only Spanish speaking, therefore school is the only place they are being exposed to English. These students are constantly saying that they cannot read at home and cannot practice English due to a lack of supplies. They do not have computers and books in their homes for extra English support that they cannot get from their families.
My Project
Flexible seating in my classroom will allow my students to feel more at home and comfortable while at school. Flexible seating will give my students the ability to move around the room and find a quiet, peaceful area to better engage in the books they are reading.
Having a comfortable chair allows students to really focus on the text and make reading an enjoyable experience.
Reading should be fun and something that the students want to do and choose to do, rather than something that is forced and just an expectation they are meeting. Engaged students are happy students that want to learn!
