I teach at a low socioeconomic school where all of my students are on free or reduced-price lunch. I have a full class of third graders and some students with special needs join us for the day! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. They work so hard to be the best students they can be and as their teacher, I try to provide them with all the tools they deserve to be successful and reach their full potential.
My Project
Students need to be comfortable in order to maximize engagement and learning. Currently, we have traditional chairs and desks in our classroom. My kiddos deserve a variety of options that will meet the need of each and every one of them. Classrooms are not "one size fits all", and the seating options shouldn't be either.
A 2012 study from the University of Minnesota found that students participated 48 percent more in discussions in a classroom with collaborative group seating versus traditional lecture-style seating, and also improved their performance on standardized tests.
I want my students to come in each day and choose what seating option will best support them that day. Classrooms in my school have adopted flexible seating and have seen a dramatic decrease in behavioral issues! I want to give my students the most conducive learning environment possible.
