My students are wonderful individuals with unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning methods. They come from very diverse cultural and social-economic backgrounds. They also have a range of academic skills and achievement levels. Some of my students are learning English as a second language, some have disabilities, and others are high achieving. These differences highlight my classroom's unique needs.
Despite our differences, our class is a community!
Throughout the year my students engage in collaborative activities and decision making processes to grow as individuals and a community. My kiddos work so hard to meet the expectations set in our safe, family environment.
My Project
In our classroom, we implement flexible seating, which means the students choose the seat and space that they will be able to work best in. To do this effectively, it requires having various seating options such as sitting on the floor, standing, bouncing, fidgeting, etc.
There are SO many benefits to implementing flexible seating!
Research shows that when students move around in a classroom, they are more engaged and can better “anchor new information and experience into neural networks.” Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Other benefits of flexible seating options include improved physical and emotional health, comfort, class community, collaboration and sensory input.
