We are a Title I school in a small, rural town in North Carolina. About 80% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. The budget seemingly shrinks every year, making it nearly impossible to obtain the necessary materials for the best learning experience. I use collaboration in my teaching on a daily basis to make learning more engaging and hands-on. My goal is to teach my students how to be 21st-century learners and I do this by teaching collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
I am hoping to make my classroom a warm and inviting classroom for any child that walks through my doors. Being a Science teacher, I want my kids to come to class ready to work collaboratively and feel comfortable while doing so. I have started the process of switching my classroom over to flexible seating and want to keep adding. I love when my kids get excited to work in different areas of the room and by giving them choices of where to sit (with a couch, wobble seat, or bean bag seat), I am helping them take charge of their learning. I believe that when kids feel comfortable, learning happens so much easier!
