Help me give my students the flexibility they need in the classroom. Please help me provide my students with the opportunity to chose the seating option that helps them focus, stay engaged, and learn best.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our class will consist of 22-25 very active and energetic 3rd-grade students. Moving to 3rd grade from teaching 2nd grade this past year, I know many of the students coming to my classroom well and know that each of these students has their own diverse backgrounds and therefore learning needs when they come into the classroom.
Understanding these diverse backgrounds and needs, I encourage movement and choice in the classroom.
Students are provided time to work independently, in pairs, and in groups. While students participate in these activities, they often choose to sit on the floor or carpet and stand at their desks. Just as adults, my students don't like or thrive in their learning when sitting in the same spot all day.
About 75% of the students in my school qualify for free/reduced-price lunch. Our school and our classroom community are engaging, safe, and constant space in their everyday lives.
My Project
Just like adults get tired of sitting in the same, hard chair all day, students do too! My students will greatly benefit from more flexible and comfortable seating options to promote their engagement in their learning.
These flexible seating items will provide students with the opportunity to engage in their learning in a space that is comfortable and promotes movement.
Students will be able to move their feet at their seat with the chair bands, wiggle and move on stools and wiggle seats, and have comfort from the cushions on the stools.
Each of these items will be used daily to help my students feel comfortable and at home in our classroom community. I am looking forward to seeing the learning that occurs when students have the comfort and choice from their flexible seating!
