My class is in a low income area in Indianapolis. We are a small charter school in historic Irvington. We dont have much of a budget to get things in our room to meet their needs to move. With a class full of 6 and 7 year olds, they get wiggly very quickly. My class is a class with inclusion students. We have many that are far below grade level. This means that for many of them, focusing on their learning is an issue. Sitting in the school provided desks is quite difficult for them. My room is full of energetic happy children who struggle to sit at a desk all day. It is a struggle to come up with more appropriate seating for them.
Six and seven year old children do not do well sitting at desks all day. They need to be able to move around the room to learn. Different types of seating excites them to go to reading time because they get to sit in a new type of chair. These beanbags will be used for centers time and free reading. The beanbags wrap around the children and give many of them the much needed comfort and pressure on their bodies that they need. It gives them a sense of comfort and focus needed in the process of learning. The rug is also great because it has footprints on it for free time to provide some structured movement during times like indoor recess.
