Help me give my students flexible seating such as wobble stools and wobble cushions. These seats allow for safe fidgeting which help students focus on the academic task at hand.
I teach in a special education classroom in the public school system. My students are in kindergarten and 1st grade and have all been diagnosed with either Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Other Health Impairment (OHI). These students have very unique and diverse learning needs that range from sensory supports to extra academic supports in some or all subject areas. Most of my students have very low communication skills and frustration levels which can lead to disruptive behaviors. The classroom is small group and the ratio of staff to students is never higher than 1:3.
All of my students bring something unique to the classroom.
Every student has different strengths and weaknesses which gives my classroom an interesting dynamic.
My Project
The wobble stools will be used at my kidney table to improve focus and attention during academic instruction and guided practice. The wobble cushions will help my students to stay on their spot while sitting at the carpet. Both of these seating options will allow for safe fidgeting, which prevents students falling over or bumping into someone else.
Students with autism have a wide range of sensory needs.
Flexible seating provides sensory stimulation for the vestibular and proprioceptive senses; these have a huge impact on self-regulation. This assistance with self-regulation will hopefully minimize any behaviors that negatively effect academic instruction.
