Our school is home to over 900 diverse learners. We are nestled in the large, growing community of Santa Maria, California. Twenty-three of my students speak two different languages and all students are from bilingual families. Although these students might have struggles outside the classroom, my main goal is to make them feel confident, safe, and comfortable within the classroom.
My students thrive when they take ownership of their learning.
They love to be active, as well as work together. We try to build connections between our own lives and the content areas to create more meaningful learning.
Together we collaborate on projects that support social skills, problems solving skills, and team building skills. These activities help foster cooperation and our use of the English language. Because of my students' diverse needs, I focus on teaching the different ways our brains understand information. This way my students understand that there is always more than one way to succeed and to learn.
Done are the days of students sitting still and silent all day long. Students need to move their bodies. To keep their bodies and minds awake, I am working to provide more flexible seating within my classroom.
These Lap Desks will provide students with the option of sitting on the ground as well as sitting up in a focused position.
Our goal as a class is to create a more comfortable and approachable space for learning. Often my students choose to sit on the group during our learning time. This is a choice in my room. My hope is to offer more options while on the floor instead of laying down!
