Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a class of 22 rambunctious kindergarteners, made up of mainly boys, who are already having to overcome incredible odds to be successful. I love their tenacity and determination, and their stories are incredible and heartbreaking. Some do not know their parents and are being raised by other family members, some have endured abuse, and some have been pulled in and out of foster care.
They remind me daily to be thankful for how I’ve been blessed.
I want to help them in any way I can!
My Project
Providing children the opportunity to make decisions with seating will increase their learning because it will make them feel responsible, and provide them with a sense of ownership in the classroom. They can sit at tables in regular chairs to do work, or they can choose to use creative options, including lying or sitting on the floor. The lap desks can allow students to move to different areas of the classroom and still have a surface to use for writing. Floor seats and wobble cushions will allow my students to be on the floor to write and use their manipulatives instead of sitting at tables and desks. The balance balls can help my students who like traditional seating but need to incorporate movement to increase learning. This will also allow more small groups to work comfortably and have their own space. It provides me with flexibility when making groups and assigning individualized work. Daily 5 will also work well with flexible seating since there are a variety of skills being practiced simultaneously.
