My teaching partners and I work in an urban setting teaching students with and without disabilities. We work with the third and fourth-grade teachers designing the perfect learning environment for our students. We take pride in our school and our high amount of special education students we service. Almost 1/3 of our classrooms have students on an Individual Education Plan and all have different needs. We have them in the general education classrooms for all of their core subject areas and provide interventions and support throughout the day.
Many students have attention and hyperactivity that becomes uncontrollable for them to monitor and keep under control throughout the day.
We have been experimenting with the students trying to find different seating and fidgets or objects to keep them focused on the lesson and not have their disability control their everyday life. We have realized letting students sit in bean bag chairs, alternative seating, providing fidgets and using chair bands to keep their body moving with minimal distractions is helping our students excel. We are looking donations to help assist us in providing a perfect learning environment for all learning styles.
My Project
Students will be able to become comfortable in their environment and increase student center-based learning. My classroom has multiple leveled learners and many different lessons going on at one time. We try to find different styles of seating to make it more comfortable for them to learn in a busy environment the new balance ball seats and the flexible floor space table will provide more opportunities for different choices of seating and table space. During the center-based learning students are engaged in their work and using higher level applications. The students are more creative and more willing to apply themselves in a comfortable environment.
Research has shown flexible seating gives students choices and ownership in their learning and encourages them to take ownership of their education.
