My Students

Most people understand what it is to have a difficult day, maybe a tough week, or even a rough year. My students, in general, have only known difficulties for the majority of their lives. In addition, they have suffered trauma that has caused them to behave in ranges from acting out violently to complete withdrawal. From a capable student to one who finds it difficult to recall things he learned yesterday. Through no fault of their own, they find themselves in a world where nothing comes easy, not even the joy of learning.

Given a chance, these students will re-bound from their circumstances.

My students, with help and guidance, can and will recover. All of my students are separated from family and living on site. And they are a diverse group of students. No one race or group represents the class. The greatest commonality they share is a life once dominated by trauma.

My Project

Our students generally sit at the regular desks all day. It is quite uncomfortable. The floor is the only other option if they want to read somewhere else, which is unsafe.

Flexible seating will permit the students to read in comfort and improve their ability to read longer in a single session.

This is the most important thing we can do in education. Reading is the bottleneck for all other educational pursuits.

If we can get them to enjoy reading now, we have the best chance to improve their chances in the future. Study after study shows that flexible seating improves the student's ability to focus and read.
