My students need high top tables for learners who like to stand, and exercise balls for students who need to get energy out and help them stay focused.
We are located in a suburb just north of Columbus, Ohio. Our students come from a variety of different cultural and economic backgrounds. My students come in every day full of energy and a passion for understanding the world around them. They are funny, intelligent, active and curious individuals.
Within our district there are students from over 100 countries, speaking a wide variety of languages.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are just as diverse in their learning styles. We are home to over 1000 students in grades 6-8 and are one of the most culturally diverse schools in our district.
And yet, our students share similarities in that they love to move and sometimes learn best when there are many different seating options within the classroom. Not all students learn best at the standard desk and chair combination. Some require a different type of chair that allows them to move while they learn. Some are best served with a standing desk.
My Project
Every child learns differently, so a flexible environment provides multiple seating options that help promote individual learning! It can be very difficult for 11- to 14-year-old students to sit in traditional desks for up to 7 hours a day. Most adults would struggle with this, and kids are given so few opportunities to move around during the class periods. Many students learn better when standing, and many just need the opportunity to expend a little energy in a controlled manner. Having a variety of seats, including the traditional desk, for students to sit at will allow for them to be more active and engaged in their learning. Flexible seating also allows for a student-centered classroom.
