Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently teaching 3rd grade Dual Language. My students and I have had the opportunity to loop up to 3rd grade together. My students receive 50 percent of instruction in English and 50 percent of instruction in Spanish. About 69 percent of my students are English Language Learners. They are amazing kids because they are learning to read and write in both English and Spanish. My students are at an advantage because they are learning two languages yet they are at a disadvantage because they receive half the amount of instruction in their native language. Though they have that challenge they are making great strides. Now that we are tackling a testing grade together I want to make their classroom the most comfortable learning environment possible.
My Project
This school year I was able to implement flexible seating in my 3rd grade classroom. My students have enjoyed it so much. The students that have a difficult time sitting still have benefited from it so much. During testing, (which occurs so much beginning in third grade) stability balls and wobble stools have helped my students maintain focus and stay awake, especially during reading tests. Having flexible seating is a great way to help improve my students focus. They enjoy having options when choosing a place to sit. Being comfortable is extremely important when it comes to my students success in the classroom.
