The students in my fourth-grade classroom are a very diverse mixture of ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities in Irvine, California. We have a large number of Title I students, and our school has students that come from all over the world. With so many diverse backgrounds, we have a great degree of varying needs. Our goal is to make sure we meet the needs of all of our students to help them be successful. Teaching cannot be one-size fits all, so instructional strategies need to vary to meet those needs effectively.
My Project
Have you ever tried to sit all day in one chair? It is way too hard on your legs and back. Plus, trying to stay focused without a break is way too difficult. Trying it with fourth-graders, crazy! Providing flexible seating for my students will allow them the ability to choose what works best for them while they learn. They will be given time to get up out of their traditional desks and move to a more comfortable part of the classroom. Students will not only be able to choose where they sit but also have different options when it comes to their level of comfort.
My belief is by giving students different seating options this will allow students to become more proactive regarding their learning and lead to higher engagement while helping them stay focused.
Children cannot stay in one seat all day and need to move around. These materials will help my students get those wiggles out and stay focused for longer periods of time during small group instruction and independent work.
