Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my fourth grade Integrated Co-Teaching class is full of energy and meaningful conversation, and students are expected to focus for long periods of time. About a third of my students struggle to focus for even five minutes! My students are some of the hardest workers I know, and they are always eager to learn.
My class is made up of general education students, special education students, and English language learners.
I work in a low-income community where students cannot afford supplies and most receive free or reduced-price lunch. I strive to give them all that I can both academically and emotionally.
My Project
My class is embarking on many journeys this year. We have started to learn more about computer science and how to code in the classroom, and we are going to be starting to learn about virtual reality in the classroom. Why not add something else to our classroom? Flexible seating would be a great addition to the computer science curriculum I am introducing this year.
Research shows that allowing students to sit in flexible seating options enhances their focus, which helps students learn better.
With this project, I would be able to offer my students a variety of seating options based on what best meets their needs. Students would be able to use floor cushions, lap desks, a low table to help focus in our classroom. These options will allow them to become more comfortable, find a responsible working space, and get the most out of our work times and classroom activities.
When I work with students, I usually choose to work on the floor or in a comfortable rolling chair. Why should I get a choice and not give choices to my students?
