Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
This year, my focus is to provide alternative seating options.
My students sit in thousands of different positions. Upright, slouched, twisted, tilted, straddling their seats. They stretch out their legs, sit on them, cross them, bounce them. They balance on the front of their chair or precariously teeter on the back, tempting gravity – and common sense. They’re kids!
My Project
Elementary children spend around nine hours sitting per day. Today’s classrooms are breaking away from the ‘sit still and listen’ teaching style to one where students and teachers engage in the space. Seating has to adapt to what’s going on in the classroom in order to gain a measurable increase in student performance.
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
Flexible seating will allow my students to choose where they work and with whom. It will also allow them to change their location and positions as needed. It will encourage my students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating will encourage students to share both. And, it will encourage them to take turns in different locations and with different seating options.
Wobble chairs, ball chair, and wobble cushions are ideal for those students who like to wiggle and wobble while they sit. Each safe, stable chair has a rounded base that allows students a little movement—without tipping over! Each cushion can be used on a chair or the floor to allow for flexible seating throughout the classroom! The cushions also feature large nubs on one side and small nubs on the other—students simply select the sensory surface they prefer! These chairs and cushions aid in student focus and engagement while they can still move.
