Our school is an Expeditionary Learning school. Students learn through hands-on activities which are student centered and authentic. They participate in expeditions three times a year. Expeditions are projects where students learn deeply and think critically about a real world problem. Students in my classroom learn independently, with peers, or during small group work. They learn the importance of being a collaborative and kind member of their learning community.
My students know the importance of a learning environment that meets everyones needs.
They feel safe, loved and cared for the moment they walk through the door.
This environment encourages students to take risks with their learning and give their very best.
Over the past years, I have noticed that my students need differentiated, flexible seating choices. I try to make the classroom comfy, safe, and like home to my students so they feel comfortable to learn. I would like to do this more this year by making my classroom a completely flexible seating classroom.
My Project
Flexible seating in the classroom will motivate students to become more engaged and be responsible for their own learning. They will feel in control of how they learn because they will be choosing the seating that works best for them.
I would like to give my students the opportunity to access their learning in the best possible place.
Students will have the choice to use a wobble seat at their table, a chair on the ground with a back or a comfy pillow. The flexible seating will be able to be used during independent, peer work, or small group work. In my classroom right now I have one wobble seat and several pillows. These are very popular but I don't have enough for everyone. I would like additional flexible seating so that all of my students can have choices.
So many students are in need of movement in order to get out some energy and to keep their focus to be able to learn. I would like to provide them with more options of flexible seating to keep them engaged in their learning.
