Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or in the same way." - George Evans
I work in a low-income school district in Washington state where 100% of my students receive free meals at school.
My students are migrant learners who live on a reservation. They are eager to learn despite the odds they have against them in their lives. At our school, we do everything we can to help them be college and career ready. This includes being people who are hard workers and excited to learn.
My Project
My first graders are learning how to read. Each day, they spread out in the classroom to read some of their favorite books. They will try to use their coats as a cushion to sit on since the floor is hard, cold tile. I encourage them to continue reading but they are often uncomfortable. We have worked hard to get flexible seating going in our classroom. The couch I am requesting would provide a great space for students to do their reading and other work during the day. Being comfortable while we are reading and learning is imperative to our success. My students would be able to have options for their learning space during the day.
This project will drastically improve the options for flexible seating and level of engagement of the students while learning.
As adults, we read on couches or in bed. When we are comfortable, we can focus on what we are reading. My students need to be able to think of reading and learning as a pleasant experience rather than one where they are sitting on the hard, cold floor. By allowing them to be more comfortable, they will be able to reduce their distractions and be motivated to learn. The difference in the sensation of sitting on a comfortable seat in a quiet space versus the tile floor will help those learners to be more successful.
