My students are excited second graders at our integrated arts magnet school. Students are engaged in our learning through technology, music, dance, and the visual arts. They are active learners and are eager to come to school; they love learning in new and innovative ways.
My job is to cultivate my students' wonder and continue to challenge them to achieve their goals.
Each student in my classroom sets his or her own goals in addition to the ones I set for them. We regularly celebrate each other's achievements, and students know what they need to work on during their independent learning time.
My students spend a good portion of their day working independently during centers. Students complete our Must Do's but then work through self-chosen items as May-Do's. Much of our centers are differentiated and students are working on their own goals. During these times, students are welcome to work around the room where they can be successful. We have a few flexible seating options already, but there aren't as many as there are students and favorites are often scooped up quickly. My students would love to have more flexible seating options available to them.
Giving students opportunities to learn how they learn best, is an important part of my job.
My students navigate through different seating options and varied distractions to meet their goals and stay engaged during centers each day. As students become more successful during this time, they set the foundation for the independent study skills they'll need later.
