Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a 5th grade ELA & History teacher in a high poverty area, I see the daily struggles and challenges my students face. Nevertheless, these students are RESILIENT. They show up to class with a smile on their face and ready to learn. They are strong, charismatic and humble.
Our school's goal is to focus on socio-emotional learning so that our students are emotionally healthy to focus on their academics.
My students walk into my class craving to learn and discover new things. I love to get them excited about new projects and books. I have learned that my students do their best learning when they have space to move, laugh and experiment. This is the environment that I want to provide them to ignite their desire for learning. Although I don't have control over their home lives, I do have control over my classroom space and how learning occurs. By providing a safe, loving and flexible space, I hope to awaken my students dreams and motivate them to their highest potential.
My Project
Do you remember having to sit in class for 8 hours a day on a hard chair? Do you remember wishing you could move more in class to get rid of those ants in your pants? Well, many of us adults have discovered that sitting on those hard plastic chairs is the worst thing for our focus. Not surprisingly, my students feel the same!
Our classroom furniture needs to be as diverse as our students, because we all learn differently, and that's the magic we need to embrace.
I want my students to discover how they learn best by allowing them to try various seating options and ultimately feel comfortable to stay focused in class. Not only will my students be focused in class, but they will be able to move around the room to find the best space for them.
This project will fund the following seating options for my students: a bean bag, stability balls for students who need more wiggle room, balance disk seats and donut balls for students to either sit on the floor or add to their chairs for comfort, portable lapdesk and lastly foam play mats so students can lay on the floor comfortably to do work.
Some of us need alone time to focus, while others need groups to work best. With flexible seating in my classroom, students will be empowered by making better choices for themselves and their learning.
Who says we need to stay stuck in old times (hard plastic chairs), it's the 21st Century! We must give our students the flexibility to discover what's best for their learning and therefore take power over their education.
