Flexible Seating to Support Readers and Writers Workshop Part II
My students need access to more flexible seating. We currently have these items, but need more as we don't have enough for each child to have their own to sit in!
The students in my class are an amazing bunch of kids. They come to our small community school each and every day ready to learn.
Their enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and they are always so excited to learn something new.
When a new skill/topic is presented, they are always excited to see what it will be. They always ask many deep level questions to expand their knowledge on the new subject. The wobble stools are a great tool to allow student some quiet movement while working independently. The saucer chairs and camp chairs provide a nice comfortable place for students get settled into their reading and writing skills
The driving factor in the classroom is that fact that we have built a community for it to be OUR classroom!
My Project
About a year ago, I was lucky enough to have a flexible seating Donors Choose project funded. The students instantly fell in love with the new seating options!
With the use of flexible seating, students have increased their reading stamina.
When 8- and 9-year olds are asked to read for almost 30 minutes a day, it is extremely important for them to be comfortable. When students feel comfortable, they are ready to learn and absorb more information.
A few of the current flexible seating options we have in the classroom are getting a little bit worn out. As you can imagine with 46 students using them on a daily basis, they take some wear and tear. We also do not have enough seating options for each child to choose a flexible seat option.
