Ms. Barkley from Lincolnton NC is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Flexible Seating to Motivate Readers

Help me give my students a portable outdoor classroom. Camp chairs can be used indoors or outdoors and are the perfect option for flexible seating in a Middle School ELA classroom.

My Students

My students need to read and write daily. But who says they need to do it while sitting at desks inside the classroom. I would like a class set of lightweight, portable chairs so my students can sit back and relax while learning. This would also enable us to conduct class outdoors!

I teach 7th grade English Language Arts at a public school located in rural North Carolina.

My students' ability levels and learning styles vary greatly. I am constantly working to differentiate my instruction to come up with creative and innovative ways to best suit their individual needs.

My Project

Over the years, I have found that my students work better when they are given the freedom to sit comfortably in different places around the room, out of the confines of their desks. I have also found that they work especially well when we are able to take class outdoors.

The weather here is conducive to being outdoors much of the year and I take my students outside as much as possible.

I would take them outside more often if I had comfortable chairs to protect students' clothes and allow them to work without hunching over.

The chairs I chose are durable, easy to carry and small enough to be stored in my classroom.

I believe much of what I teach in English Language Arts can be taught anywhere, there is really no reason to force the students to sit still in their desks when they can be much more productive, imaginative, and inspired in an alternative work space.
