Flexible Seating to Maximize Learning and give Student's a Choice
My students need wobble chairs, bouncy bands, and stability balls to maximize their learning experience during small group instruction and independent learning.
My students walk into my room each and every day ready to explore and learn. They are eager and excited to gain more knowledge, yet they all come from very diverse backgrounds and upbringings. Each day, we come together as a strong classroom community. In my class, we are all equal and treat each other with kindness and respect. They love learning new concepts but cannot be confined to hard, metal chairs that don't accommodate their need for movement.
My 3rd grade classroom is made up of 23 amazing boys and girls who need a variety of seats that encourage movement, such as stability balls, wobble chairs, bouncy bands to help improve attention and create a healthy learning environment.
Our school is located in an Urban part of Martinsburg, WV that continues to grow and change rapidly. Half of the students that attend our school come from low-income families. During our days in school, we immerse ourselves in learning despite our backgrounds and any challenges we may face. My students choice in their seating gives them a voice in their learning, which is very important for young learners.
My Project
Flexible seating and student choice will help my student's success this year. My third graders enjoy working cooperatively and treat each other with kindness. In our classroom, we are family. They love to learn and share their ideas in exciting ways. Flexible seating and student choice was inspired by observing my students' excitement during choosing an area around the room to work with a group or a partner. Wobble stools and yoga balls will give my students an opportunity to comfortably work in all areas of the classroom. Students decide which seating option will allow them to do their best learning. Do they need a seat that allows them to safely move and rock? Or do they need a seat that allows them to safely bounce? All while allowing them to move in a constructive manner and get the "wiggles" out.
Research on flexible seating shows that there are many immediate benefits for students, including increased motivation, improved metabolism, better oxygen to the brain, and improve posture.
My students are energetic, creative, and fun. They will enjoy and appreciate a seating choice as they learn together.
