This is my first year teaching in Oakland. I work at a Title I school with 100% of students who qualify for free lunch. My students come from all different backgrounds and from all different cultures. Each day I am blessed to learn from them and inspired by their abilities to persevere and and overcome the tremendous obstacles that many of them face each day. Many of my students struggle academically and have high behavior needs, but are underserved for various reasons. Together we are making great strides, but there is still so much more to do.
I've asked for help to purchase alternative seating and appropriate fidgets for my students with anxiety, ADHD and those who struggle with other special needs.
My Project
Providing flexible and alternative seating to my students who have special needs or fidget problems will allow them the chance to release their energy in an appropriate way. This will take away the focus from their outbursts and refocus it on their academics. Privacy partitions help many of my students feel safe and secure when working individually at their desks.
Often times many of my students act out or disrupt the class because they aren't able to control their energy and sit in a traditional chair for long periods of time.
Flexible seating has been proven to help students become less disruptive. They are more likely to stay on task and engaged, allowing them better access to information and knowledge.
