The students in my class study the standards through a visual and performing arts lens and are a unique, diverse group of learners. They are enthusiastic, interesting, eager to grow and look forward to showing what they learn in creative ways. As a class, we actively engage in project-based learning that emphasizes collaboration, knowledge, problem-solving, responsibility and real-world implementation through community service and school.
My innovative, artistic sixth graders need to be able to move!
They work at their highest potential when their classroom is fluid and favorable to their different learning styles. I have gradually added flexible seating opportunities in the hope that I could help maintain a strong sense of community and a dedication to learning.
Now, these independent thinkers gather around my beanbag chair, sit in the garden outside, rush to the love seat or switch desks in order to support the different modes of learning we utilize - presentations, independent activities, group work or peer to peer instruction. With more seating options, our classroom has become more welcoming and our test scores have gone up. I would like to transform my classroom completely to a flexible seating environment.
My Project
Research shows that students in classrooms where flexible seating is an option, have more positive academic and social/emotional experiences. I've seen my students feel empowered when they have a choice and control over their learning environment. Flexible seating encourages students to identify spaces where they can relax, focus, and be productive.
My classroom is a diverse mix of gifted, learning challenged, high-energy, enthusiastic learners who deserve the opportunity to move around their classroom and collaborate with their peers.
With your donations, our class will receive additional seating options that will engage not only one group of learners, but many in the years to come.
