My students need to have flexible seating in order to the best that they can be. Lacking movement and physical activity in their lives, alternative seating will give them means to move and focus.
My students are sons, daughters. They are dreamers, they are thinkers. They are our future teachers, engineers, nurses, bankers, artists. They are sometimes frightened, sometimes scared. Most of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We are a Title I, inner city school. Many of my students do not have their basic needs met, and are a bit anxious when they come to school.
I strive to make my classroom a very positive, safe, comfortable space, where students feel comfortable taking chances, where they do not feel threatened.
All of my students have a future. I want their futures to start now, in my classroom. I promise my students 6 hours a day to take chances, to take risks, to try new things.
My Project
Flexible seating such as exercise balls and wiggle seats will enable my students to move while learning; hence, will increase focus time. This will lead to increased retention of concepts and strategies. The stability balls will force students to have good posture; therefore, making tasks such as writing and mathematical computation much easier to complete.
Many students today do not get enough physical activity, making it even more difficult to focus while sitting down, and sitting for extended periods of time.
Exercise stability balls will allow students to move while learning, will increase core strength and balance, and will ultimately increase attention span. The wiggle seats will also allow students to move as they sit in their assigned areas.
