Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a very diverse school district and at a Title I school. Many of our students come from low-income families and qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite economic challenges, it is my job to show these young learners that with hard work they can achieve their goals.
I teach the future of our country.
My young second graders are energetic and eager to learn. Each student is a unique individual, and it is my goal to help each of them realize their potential. I focus on building relationships and creating a positive classroom community. I want each of my students to feel safe in my classroom and happy to come to school each day.
My Project
Flexible seating is a classroom design where students choose which seating option works best for their learning style. It promotes problem solving, collaboration, and creates an open learning environment. Our teaching strategies and expectations have evolved over the years, but classroom design hasn't. In order to teach students 21st century skills, more learning opportunities need to be provided. Students learn best when they are more comfortable.
Your donation will provide 17 different seating options for a class of 22 second grade students.
3 wobble chairs and 3 wobble cushions encourage active sitting and provide light exercise for the legs, back, and core. 5 backless stools will allow students to adopt different — and, frequently, healthier — postures than conventional seating arrangements. Lastly, 6 bouncy bands, which strap to the students' chairs so they can move while they work at their desks.
I have seen first hand the positive impact student choice has made in my classroom by allowing students to chose where they would like to work throughout the room. These flexible seating options will add to their choices and create a more engaging learning environment.
