Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located within an urban area of Los Angeles County. The school has a population of about 600 students grades K-5th. The school has over 90 percent of students on free and reduced lunch. It also has the highest population of Foster Youth in the district. My students are from diverse ethnic background which includes; African American, Latino, White, Asian, and Pacific Islander.
My students are in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade that require special education services to access grade level curriculum.
My students receive Specialized Academic Support through the Resources Specialist Program (RSP). Because of the unique needs of my students, the typical delivery of curriculum is not always beneficial. My students usually require small group instruction with material and tools that make learning more concrete. In addition, my students often require behavior supports that are as unique and individualized as their learning styles.
My Project
My students are exceptional learners and thinkers! They often require many different strategies, techniques, and out of the box ideas to access grade level curriculum. Based on current research, children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can benefit from flexible seating! A search of the research found that children who use flexible seating, such as wobble chairs, have increased oxygen to brain, more time on task, and their is also a link to increased student achievement. I believe that there are multiple benefits for my students with ADD/ ADHD to having flexible seating options!
I think it would be a huge benefit to allow student the flexibility to move while learning!
I will set the expectation for how the wobble chairs will be used during small group and independent work times. I will allow the students to use the wobble chairs while teaching my student in small groups. They can also have the option of using the wobble chairs during independent work time. I am anticipating that by allowing students the flexibility of moving while working on a learning task, this will encourage them to complete assignments and increase work production!
