I teach a classroom of 2nd graders. That means I have 26 seven and eight-year-old kids in a room with me all day, and I love it! Each one of my students is unique, curious, energetic and precious.
In our classroom I work hard to teach not just reading, writing and math but also to show my kids the value of taking risks, finding their own solutions and making good decisions for themselves.
These kids make my job incredibly rewarding. It is an honor and a challenge to work with them and help them learn and grow every day.
My Project
Last year I began using flexible seating with my students in the classroom. The concept is simple. I provide a variety of seating options for the students to use in the room. They decide where they'd like to sit.
If you come in our room you might find someone doing their math at the stand-up table, reading a book with a pillow on the floor, or finishing their writing at a private desk.
Flexible seating has changed the feel of our classroom because now every student owns every inch of this classroom, not just the little space their desk is in. They appreciate being able to work in different spaces and with different classmates throughout the day and they have done a remarkable job with the responsibility.
I invested a lot of my own money in this last year, purchasing storage bins for their belongings (since we don't have our own desks anymore), stools, pillows and more. Now I'm looking for a little bit of help to put the finishing touches on this classroom project.
Without traditional desks in rows, the rug will become our gathering place. Right now we're just sitting on the floor. I'd love to have a dedicated rug to gather on, with a spot on it for each student to sit. We could also use some more pillows. These kids are just like me, and they love to be comfortable when they work, and the few pillows I have are in high demand.
