My students need a specific amount of chairs for this to be implemented with fidelity. The Yoga Balls with allow my students to move even while working, while the futon is implemented during flex time.
My students are someone who needs a champion. Advocate for their specific needs in the class. An environment that allows them to do more, be comfortable, and be accountable for their success. I want them to see a glimpse of what choice and flexibility looks like in the workplace and in college.
One of the most eye opening experiences about college was the freedom of choice: The ability to go about and go where you want , study when you want, but I believed most importantly, study where you want.
I want to continue implementing the same mentality in my classroom with flexible seating.
Students would have the ability to choose where they want to sit during individual/ small group study. They would be able during whole group to choose desks, yoga balls, floor mats, etc to give them the freedom to learn to the best of your ability.
They would also be provided with a white board and expo marker of their own. The class would also be more hands on with a station for for them interact with classroom materials on a kinesthetic level.
My Project
Not every student learns the same. It is like asking a fish to fly. The same should go for a classroom. Not every student learns the best in traditional seating. Flexible Seating has shown an increase in student engagement, and excitement to come to class, and the advocation of choice. Students will not see rudimentary desks and chairs, but be welcomed by a classroom that engages kinesthetic learners with yoga balls, high top seating and opens up the possibility that is choice.
Its being called "The Starbucks Classroom: The Classroom of the 21st Century." These students will be able to finally make choices.
Choices that will affect their everyday successes; choices that will allow them to be successful leaders and learners in and outside the classroom.
