Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade classroom is full of wonder and excitement. My students are a diverse and vibrant community of learners. They come to school with a variety of learning needs and many are learning English as a second language and come from high poverty households.
Each day, I am greeted by enthusiastic six and seven year olds eager to see what the day brings.
They are naturally curious about everything and want to become readers, writers, and problem solvers. As I help them learn these skills, I am also helping them to develop 21st century skills. These skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking are developed through inquiry lessons and projects.
My Project
Where do you like to read, write and work with colleagues? We learn best when we choose a work-station that best suits us, as well as, the activity.
Flexible seating is the ability for students to choose where they sit and what type of seating they use.
Flexible seating will empower students to choose seats where they will learn best. To optimize student learning and choice, I would like to provide my students with a variety of seating options to support each of their unique bodily-spatial and kinesthetic needs.
Our classroom needs balance balls, bean bags and lap trays to provide student centered flexible seating options. Learning spaces such as these are designed to support learning that is self-directed, independent, interdependent, authentically personalized and differentiated, learning that is active rather than passive, and student-driven.
