Please consider helping us to build our flexible seating options for our classroom, such as soft chair discs, counter height chairs, stools, cushions, etc.
Some of my students need movement to think best while others need stillness. Flexible seating allows for the differentiation that is needed to maximize learning in our classroom. Many times throughout our day, students are asked to collaborate with their peers. All of our flexible seating options are easy to move and interchangeable.
Whether students need movement or the opportunity to stand to do their best work, offering flexible seating respects each and every student's need and supports them on their learning journey.
My Project
Students enter the math class, take a PROBLEM of the DAY back to their "flexible" seat and instantly engage their brains in mathematical problem solving. After a few minutes of independent think-time, students are given a "Two Minute Talk Time" window to collaborate with peers and to share their thinking and strategies.
Students have choice in where they meet up with peers, and offering flexible seating provides the comfort and/or movement that students need to set themselves up for successful and meaningful learning.
Currently, we have 6 wobble stools and 6 oodle stools. Both allow for movement front/back and side/side. Another advantage of these particular stools is that they force the student to engage their core in order to balance. We also have 6 ball chairs which can support a small amount of "bouncing" which can be a relief for those that need to move to do their best thinking.
I would like to increase student choice by adding taller stools that can support sitting and/or standing at a taller table. Also, placing the wobble cushions on a traditional seat will allow some comfort and movement when needed.
