My students need flexible seating options to help them focus longer, while builder stronger bodies! Each of them will be able to have their bodies feel less fatigued and their brains more engaged.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school.
I have students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a kindergarten grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 90% of our students are African American or Latino.
My Project
When I work, I want to be comfortable and sometimes it is not at a desk. The new furniture will provide the students with a different option besides a hard chair. Many students also have attention problems, being able to move and change seating can eliminate the behavior issues that may arise. They can pull the chairs together as they are reading and discussing.
Again, students spend so much time in the classroom and they need to be comfortable.
That may be having a chair that allows them to move, a classroom that they can collaborate, and even a spot where they can work in piece. These students are learning that a classroom is not just within the four walls of a classroom. It doesn't have to be a place that is orderly and uncomfortable. Help these students get a chance for change.
