My Students

My BRILLIANT 4th grade scholars live in the heart of a gentrified area right outside of Atlanta’s city limits, where the districts serving our Black communities rank as some of the lowest in the State, and the Nation. My students enjoy reading and literacy and have some of the most creative and intelligent minds. Yet almost all of my students read below grade level, many of whom are 2-3 grade levels behind. Most of our families experience some form of poverty, racism, mental illness, incarceration, and unemployment. Despite their circumstances, my scholars show up every day ready to learn and contribute their gifts and talents to building a strong school community.

My Project

I strongly believe that nurturing and developing our scholars' love for reading is critical for Black, Brown and low-income children to survive and thrive in our society. Adding more seating options to our Reading+Writing Oasis will allow EVERY student to simultaneously enjoy the benefits of flexible seating, which this past month has proven to help our scholars be fully present, comfortable and more involved in their learning process, which is a skill that, once acquired, is a lifelong asset.

We will utilize the requested items in the following ways:

The BOOK SHELF and RUG will be used to organize the books that we have in our classroom. We don't currently have an easy or convenient place where scholars have quick access to books for independent reading, so a book shelf plus rug would be the perfect addition to our Reading+Writing Oasis!

The Coffee Table will be for scholars to better utilize the various floor seating options by having an area where they can comfortably write!

The camp chairs turned out to be one of the most requested seating options, and all the students have asked me to get more! In addition to the camp chairs, the students requested to add the back pillows, the fidget bands, and

The best way to learn how to read, is to read more and love it. The recent changes to our learning environment has already helped my scholars maintain focus, it has increased their sense of self and well-being, and is making our learning process more fun and exciting! Help every student in our class unlock their genius and illuminate their paths on a lifelong educational journey!
