Flexible Seating Promotes Collaborative Learning

My Project

For many students, alternative learning workstations can have a positive impact on attitude, productivity, and engagement.

Our math classes focus on thinking and problem solving and students need to learn how to work in collaborative pairs/groups.

We have always allowed students to stand if they wanted to, and many chose to do so. Unfortunately, most classrooms do not have access to standing tables or workstations. Last year we allowed students to use wobble boards and carts as workstations and they were very successful. This year, however, more and more students are expressing interest in using and having access to alternative learning or seating options. One student who has experienced test anxiety in the past used a wobbleboard/cart and was able to complete an entire assessment without any issues. Having to sit for most of the school day can be challenging, so having the opportunity to stand and work can also prevent or reduce disruptions in the classroom and facilitate learning.
