My Students

The students in our urban school are culturally, economically, and academically diverse. My ELA classroom sees 87 fourth and fifth grade students each day. We meet on the rug for our daily mini-lesson so that we can learn in close proximity to each other. Our rich discussions are inspiring and enriching. However, as the kids grow, their demand for comfort grows as well. To make our classroom a place of comfort AND inspiration, I'd like to give my students flexible seating options.

My Project

My students love to learn! I have 4 beanbags in my room and they are highly desirable! I'd like to give my students more alternative seating when we meet on the rug as well as during independent work time and group work.

Learning is not one-size-fits-all, so why should their seats be that way?

With flexible seating, students can find what work best for them. A rotation system can be motivating and reduce monotony while still creating predictability for when it's their turn for a particular type of seat. The lure of a particular seat can also be an incentive for on task behavior. I see flexible seating as a way to give students choice, to honor differences, and to motivate.
