I am a first year, first semester teacher who is just setting up her classroom! I want to set my students up for success by giving them flexible seating options.
Many of our students come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, and our campus receives Title I funding.
All of our students are provided a free breakfast, and at least 75% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches.
My students have ENERGY! It can be hard for them to stay seated and engaged while sitting in a hard, uncomfortable chair all day. They often get fidgety and restless. I would like the opportunity to offer them flexible seating options that will make them more comfortable while they are learning! A comfortable learning environment will lead to more student engagement, which means more success!
Every child learns differently, so why do we expect that they are all going to learn sitting in the same chairs? Just like adults, they get tired of sitting in the same chairs all day. They need more comfortable seating options to enhance student learning. Studies show that students learn better when they are physically active and comfortable. Students are able to bounce on an exercise ball, sit, stand, kneel, etc.
Flexible seating options would give my students the freedom to sit comfortably and wiggle around without being a disruption to others learning experiences.
This project would significantly help my students stay engaged in our learning throughout the day. I want them to feel comfortable and at home in our classroom. I cannot wait to see all of the things we can do with flexible seating!
