My students need Hokki stools to provide a safe way to manage high energy levels in the classroom without causing disruptions to the learning environment.
As the social worker at Maple School, I serve students from 1-6th grade in both regular education and special education. The diverse students at our school come to school every day ready to learn. They are challenged at times due to circumstances beyond their control. Many of the students struggle with lack of resources due to high poverty levels. Many of them have experienced considerable trauma in their short lives which can lead to an inability to focus and difficulty following educational norms. All of the students at our school have the potential to be leaders, directors, presidents, and to make substantial positive changes in our world. They are smart, talented, funny and imaginative. They impress me on a daily basis and their circumstances will only make them stronger!
My Project
Students at our school are in need of positive tools to manage negative classroom behaviors. Often students are impacted by circumstances out of their control including the effects of poverty and adverse childhood experiences. These often manifest in the classroom as difficulty staying focused, classroom disruptions, and difficulty sitting still while instruction is being provided. Flexible seating has proven to increase students' focus and attention in the classroom. One classroom at our school is entirely flexible seating and the teacher has seen positive results even with the most challenging students.
Hokki stools have been proven to improve students focus and attention.
They provide a safe way for students to burn excess energy that reduces disruption in the learning environment. Hokki stools will be distributed amongst the 12 classrooms (1-6th grade) in order to provide flexible seating options for regular and special education students. Students will benefit from the ability to utilize the Hokki stool as needed.
