Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have just completed my third year of teaching at an elementary school in Mesquite, Texas. I had some amazing 3rd graders this past year, and I know I am going to have another great group of students this coming school year. Future writers, book editors, mathematicians, biologists, historians, tech entrepreneurs, and many more occupations will be in my room in the 2018-2019 school year. I am excited to get started!
My school is one of the biggest elementary schools in the area with about 900 students.
We are a bilingual campus that is predominantly Hispanic and African American, and we are a tile 1 campus. Our school population is growing all the time as more houses and neighborhoods are being built. I am proud of my school and students!
My Project
Flexible seating options in the classroom give students an opportunity to learn in a way that is more natural and comfortable. I currently have cushions and lawn chairs for my students to sit on, and they love them! It has helped motivate them in class as an incentive, allowed them to be more focused on their work, and has cut down on behavior issues in my classroom across the board. The cushions allow students who like to sit on the floor that freedom without the issue of becoming disruptive when they get uncomfortable on the tile floor. The lawn chairs give students who like a traditional desk a more comfortable seat in which to do their work.
With these new additions to the seating options in my classroom I can clearly see my students working at the back round table collaboratively with their partners swinging their legs gently to get their wiggles out on the bar stools.
I can see other students at the back rectangle table laying under the table with the stool propping up their books as they read a book for pleasure after they have finished their work.
Choice in seating gives students a sense of ownership in their learning, it is my hope that these new additions will only continue to strengthen the flexible seating options in my classroom.
