My fourth and fifth grade classroom is a place where students are pushed to challenge themselves in all aspects of life. We spend as much time as we can collaborating with each other and building communication skills to better prepare the children for college and careers in their future.
Our class is full of different flexible seating options that allow the students to work comfortably and collaboratively throughout the day.
These seating options lead to deep conversations and enthusiastic learning. Communication is very important for the children of this generation who spend so much time behind a screen. It is very important to me that they are expected to communicate with one another, and that they learn how to work together to accomplish a common goal.
In a combo class, the students are expected to be able to work independently as the teacher is working with the other grade level. With flexible seating the students need places to work around the room, so that they are able to concentrate while I am working with the opposite grade level.
The stadium seats and lap desks are mobile and allow students to find a quiet place to work independently or collaboratively.
In order for flexible seating to be successful, it is important that the children have many choices. These items will provide more choices for the children in my classroom.
