My students need a variety of flexible seating options to provide control over their learning environment. Incorporating stools, wobble cushions, floor seats, portable floor desks, clipboards, and chair bands will provide my students with many opportunities.
In elementary school, students tend to spend the majority of their school day in the same classroom with their peers and teacher. Aside from a daily specialist class, recess, and lunch, there is little time spent outside of the classroom's four walls. As a teacher, I deeply understand the importance of designing a fun, safe, and engaging environment that will foster and further develop my students' growth.
My incoming 4th grade students are energetic, enthusiastic about learning, and compassionate about exploring through inquiry.
They come from classrooms which were designed to allow for a large amount of physical flexibility and choice in their learning environment. Many of my students have various sensory and/or physical needs such as Communicative Interactive Disorders, ADD/ADHD, and Specific Learning Disabilities that can greatly affect their focus and performance in the classroom. They desire the opportunity to have flexible options in their seating which directly align to the dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices that they will soon be immersed into.
My Project
Providing flexible seating options in my classroom will pose many benefits for students of all needs and abilities. My students will feel empowered with choices in regards to where to sit and learn, along with the opportunity to change locations/seats as needed.
Creating a comfortable learning environment will motivate and excite students in new ways while increasing their engagement and focus.
The flexible seating products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble cushions and chair bands will provide some wiggling and physical movement opportunities to those working at their desks. Students who are interested in working elsewhere in the classroom will be able to use stools for sitting at the counter/table or as an alternative chair if necessary. For floor seating, students can choose to utilize a stadium chair to sit comfortably and work with a clipboard. The lap desks can also be used for independent work time around the classroom or even for sitting on the floor in the front for lessons/instruction.
Because all of these seating options are lightweight, easy to move, and swapped often, students will be able to easily incorporate them into many areas of our classroom and share them with one another.
I'm excited to offer these flexible seating opportunities to my students and to examine the positive changes and successes that it will bring!
