First grade is a time for learning and discovery. My students are active and always on the go. Imagine wanting to be able to sit on the floor, or in a beanbag, or somewhere other than a traditional desk, but having no other options. These active kids need that option to allow them to focus on what is important.
My students need choice.
They are an ACTIVE bunch, where traditional desks don't allow them to get to their full potential. As a teacher of students who love to be up and moving, I know this is the best opportunity for them to make their learning improve.
My Project
Flexible seating will be ideal for students who seem to always want to do their own thing and be able to make a choice, also known as the opposite of what the teacher tells them. Sit at the carpet, but I want to sit at my desk. Sit at your desk, but I want to sit on the floor. Incorporating flexible seating will allow for students to make the choice themselves.
Giving students the freedom to choose allows them to be in control and have freedom within the classroom!
Flexible seating will make a huge difference in learning because they will have the freedom to sit, stand, or even lay down. They will be able to improve their focus, and their learning. Students are the number one priority and giving them the option to choose will allow them to focus on another one of my priorities, their learning!
I have requested beanbags, Big Joe chairs, a small picnic table and more so that students are able find what’s most comfortable for them. The clipboards are for students who decide a table or desk may not be for them. This allows for choice throughout. Other great items for the student include yoga mats where my students can sit or lay and cushiony spots to make sitting on the floor more comfortable. This will overall improve learning and school life because they will be able to do what’s most comfortable for them and allowing them to focus on more important things. Students spend most of their time at school and in the classroom, let’s make it possible and comfortable for them!
