Mrs. Anderson from Hartland MI is requesting Flexible Seating through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Flexible Seating -- Not Just for Fun!

Help me give my students an inviting place to learn every day that meets their needs with flexible seating! I want to give them the best Second grade year possible.

My Students

I have a room full of 26 excited second graders who are ready to learn! Many of my students have movement needs in order to be successful. Classrooms are full of many different needs, mine included.

In my class I have students with ADHD, students on the autism spectrum, students with anxiety, students lacking social emotional coping skills, students way above grade level.

Every one of my students is special and unique, yet, all of their desks are exactly the same. My students, and all of their different needs, deserve a place to learn that suits their individual needs best. Students are motivated to work hard when they can wobble on a stool, or recline across a pillow on the floor, bounce on an exercise ball or let their legs dangle at a bar stool.

Flexible seating will help me teach them appropriate behaviors and channel that energy towards learning by giving them room to move and fidget when they need to. This being my first year back in the classroom, I have already spent over $1,000 just to provide supplies, books, and necessary items.

My Project

We are requesting stools, balance ball chairs and wobble chairs. Research shows the benefits of student choice, the freedom to move and how flexible seating heightens collaborative learning which improves social skills. Team work allows for more creativity and classroom discussions since students can easily work in pairs or small groups.

This leads to increased student engagement which is linked to higher motivation and academic performance, as well as improved overall behavior.

Students stay on task and accomplish more than usual because they don't want to lose the option of sitting where they want. The classroom environment should mirror what students will encounter in their future careers, and collaboration, problem solving, and meaning making are at the forefront of most job descriptions. Standard desks situated in rows do not foster open communication and collaboration. Please help me provide a comfortable, engaging learning environment for my second graders!
