Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a multi-cultural classroom of 3rd graders on the west side of Chicago. I want to instill a love of learning and enable my students to find success in my classroom. "Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world." ~ Nelson Mandela
My students are creative, energetic, and eager to learn!
They soak up new information like sponges, however, my resources are limited working in an inner city school. Our International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum is hands-on, inquiry based, and internationally minded. I have a wide range of academic ability in my classroom, so I work hard to personalize students' learning so that each child is challenged, reaching their full potential. This year I have implemented flexible seating, and my students absolutely love it! It is clear that flexible seating has created a more engaging and collaborative environment for my students to work both independently and in small groups.
My Project
I truly believe that flexible seating works, and I know that my students would benefit greatly from having more seating options in my classroom. We are requesting stand up desks, wobble stools, and a cozy rug that will help my students stay focused and have a comfortable and inviting environment to learn and grow!
Allowing students to move to different seats and workspaces throughout a day helps with student engagement and classroom management.
Flexible seating allows for students to be both independent and collaborative while they pull up stools to different tables, stand up while they work, or meet with classmates on a comfortable carpet. My students are definitely happier when they can move more and aren't restricted to a chair.
After a lot of research, I have learned that flexible seating increases student engagement, improves classroom behavior with active learning, reduces daily sedentary time, enables greater creativity, and has many health benefits, such as burning more calories and preventing certain diseases.
A lot of our school day is centered around small group work, whether it is daily 5 literacy, book clubs, math stations, or science stations. With flexible seating, my students can easily collaborate in small groups and make smart choices as to where they might learn best. I know the items I have requested will allow my students a variety of locations within the classroom where they can have fun learning and find personal success throughout the school day!
