My school has a diverse population with half of the students coming from low‑income households. According to greatschools.org, "Test scores for low-income students at this school fall below the state average for all students."
There are three classrooms at my school that have piloted flexible seating, a model which boosts student engagement and has actually been proven to improve test scores.
According to greatschools.org, "Students here perform about average on state tests, are making about average year-over-year academic improvement, and this school has below average results in how well it’s serving disadvantaged students." Providing more students with the additional accommodations that flexible seating provides would inevitably result in greater student achievement.
At my school, where I teach 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies, there is growing number of classrooms incorporating a flexible seating model. Because of limited funding for public schools, teachers such as myself and my colleagues have used their own money and have relied upon fundraising sources such as DonorsChoose.org to build a better classroom environment.
The items that I am requesting have been chosen based upon feedback from my colleagues that have piloted flexible seating and have seen the greatest benefits from the specific seating items in my shopping cart.
Resources I have chosen include the Kore wobble chair, a seating style recommended by a fellow teacher. According to the KORE website, "the Kore Chair is not just a piece of furniture...it's a LIFE-Changer for active kids, kids with ADHD and Autistic kids...Aggressive wobbling on a KORE Chair increases blood to the brain and thereby quiets the requirement for fidgety kids to move...Kids learn better and are more productive...the Kid who may be considered Unteachable" is now able to learn!" I am also requesting swivel stools.
