Ms. Slough from Houston TX is requesting Reading Nooks, Desks & Storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need flexible seating options and headphones to use with our new Chromebooks. I have included 1 standing desk, 4 stools, 2 portable desks, and 5 headphones so that my students have options while learning!
This year I will be teaching a new class. I'm very excited to get started on teaching AP Human Geography. I love the topic, and I'm excited to try my hand at working with gifted and talented students!
I'm working on lesson and planning for the class this year, and I want to try some new things in my new room.
Flexible seating and technology integration are some of my goals for this year. Most of the students in my school are low income, and on free/reduced lunch, so anything I can do to make my classroom more comfortable or their learning more engaging, I will try!
Flexible seating can be very effective at helping students be comfortable in the classroom and remain engaged for ninety-minute class periods. This is very important for 9th graders with high energy!
My other goal is using the new technology we will be getting this year. I will be getting a set of Chromebooks for my classroom, and I want to have some headphones for students to use when watching videos. I like to incorporate student-paced lessons, but not all students have headphones to use when watching the embedded videos and widgets.
Flexible seating has been shown to increase student attention span in class. Improving their attention span means that they're able to not only absorb more learning but also ENJOY class more. If they can burn off their extra energy by standing or be more comfortable sitting on a stool or the floor, that ability to choose can make a student's experience in a class completely different.
I try to make my class interesting and engaging, but if a student is just plain uncomfortable in their seat or needs the flexibility of standing while working on a project, even the most engaging class can fall flat.
Flexible seating is considered a kind of differentiation, and it is one that makes a classroom space much more functional.
We're getting Chromebooks this year in my classroom, so the flexible seating will be even more useful as students take charge of their own learning through student directed activities. I have also included some headphones in my request for students who don't have their own. I have many low income students who do not have their own cellphones and headphones, and I would love to avoid making them use the Dollar Store headphones I keep stashed away anymore.
Please help me make my classroom an exciting and inviting space!
