My school is a Title I school located in Northeast Georgia. We have many at-risk students that live in economically challenging situations. Our students come to school every day facing obstacles most people can't imagine. I want my students to have a place that is comfortable, where they can be themselves and make dreams for their future.
We have an amazing administration and dedicated staff that makes sure our students have a place they come to every day that makes them feel loved and safe, we are family here at WES.
Our students get that feeling the second they walk in our doors every morning. We have the best kids at our school and they deserve the best learning environment I can provide them.
My Project
Think about the place you choose to go to when you want to enjoy a good book. You probably grab a spot on the couch or in your favorite chair. You do not, however, choose an uncomfortable place to sit. This is the case for my students. Sitting in a desk all day is very daunting. I want to offer my students the opportunity to take control of their learning. I want them to be able to choose a place that is comfortable for them to enhance their learning.
When students are given the opportunity to make choices for themselves, they take ownership in their learning and begin to thrive.
They become engaged and focused. They are not worried about wiggling and being disruptive because they are comfortable and ready to learn. It is my goal to make our classroom an environment that feels like home. A place where my students feel confident and safe. I believe that taking the clutter of chairs and desks out of the classroom and bringing in the coziness of home, will help my students excel in ways they didn't even know were possible.
By providing exercise balls and wobble seats, my students will be able to move and wiggle while they sit. The surf portable lap desks will allow my students to sit where they choose while working on computers. The storage ottoman will help with organization and allow my students a place to stretch out and read. The beanless club chairs will also provide comfortable reading options. The clipboards will be used while my students are completing work in their flexible seating options.
